Are Google Ads Following You?

by Brian on 3/31/2010

Have you noticed lately when you visit a website, for example quicktax.ca or abc.com, and then go to another website, your Google Ads start to become related to that previous website you were visiting?  I notice this a lot with my blog.  I once visited QuickTax.ca, and now the Google ads appearing on my blog are related to QuickTax.  However, when I visited by blog on my iPhone, the ads were completely different.  Just now I went to Abc.com, and the ads are no longer for QuickTax but for ABC television shows.

So if you notice as your surf the web that you seem to be seeing the same ads all the time, it’s part of Google’s retargeting campaign. With AdWords you can now specifically target users who have visited your website before, and show them the same advertisement over and over again on different sites until they buy your product. Personally, I find seeing income tax software ads all the time very annoying. But I guess from a marketing perspective, this repetition works.

Anyway, if you’re wondering why you’re always seeing the same ads on every website you go to, you can blame Google.  If it gets too annoying, erase your cookies. Also, if you want to see what dirt Google has on you, and opt out of this retargeting, you can use this website.
