The Birth of Horizontal Gaming

by Brian on 1/27/2010

Here are some of my thoughts about the iPad. Some of them come from listening to commentary from twit.tv, which I think they got wrong, and some are just my own thoughts.

  • You will probably be able to read Kindle ebooks on it by using the Kindle iPhone App.
  • Is there a way to print documents from it?
  • Leo thinks it would replace TV sets, or the Apple TV, but I tend to disagree. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to do other tasks, i.e. check Facebook or browse the web while watching TV (but it’s good to have a break from that stuff).

How would a device like the iPad fit into my life?

For me I see it as a device I would keep in the living room. I spend all my working day sitting in front of a computer, so it would be nice to be able to leave my laptop in the office and have something else that doesn’t seem work-like to check Facebook or Twitter, read ebooks or websites, and other more personal, non-work related stuff. It would be more of a personal, personal computer.

What kind of games will we see on the iPad?

With the almost 180 degree viewing angle of the screen, and the much larger screen than an iPod Touch, Game Boy, you are going to see more multiplayer family oriented games, played the same way as board games. Picture the iPad resting in the middle of the dinning room table with the family sitting around it, each person tapping the screen.  I originally envisioned this style of gaming with table top computing, but I think the iPad will finally start to make it a reality. As the screens get bigger, so would the possibilities of games increase. Picture it as the birth of horizontal gaming where the screen sits horizontal, rather than vertical.
