Becoming Internet Famous

by Brian on 10/21/2008

Is it reasonable to say that some of the rules in mainstream popularity have changed because of the Internet? So that if one wanted to be famous, they do not have to be Britney Spears or have millions of dollars to spend on PR? Or if I wanted to sell a product, can I take advantage of the Internet to do some kind of person to person marketing?

From what the bloggers are saying, it’s true. I think it has something to do with the power of niche markets, and peer to peer marketing. So for example, if I wanted to sell a product, I could start a Twitter account, search for some people to follow who are interested in what I’m selling, dialog with them, maybe even tweak my product to solve some specific problem they are having with competing products, and then let the Twitter P2P effect explode. One person blogs about their success with my product, who is read by another person who tries out my product, who in turn blogs about it while the cycle continues endlessly.

So why not give it a try myself? A simple product to sell is myself. First, we’ll need a way to judge when I become Internet famous, so here’s what I came up with:

  • Have a least three people a day comment on my blog. This is probably my most reasonable goal.
  • Increase the daily visits to my blog to at least 1000.
  • Be a guest on some CBC radio program for my craziness of wanting to be an Internet celebrity
  • Make it into the top 100 most followed profile on Twitter
  • Be a panelist on TWiT and interviewed by Leo Laporte
  • Make it on the frontpage of Digg.com at least once
  • Get a free flight to somewhere nice, and maybe give a keynote somewhere. What can I say, I live in Thunder Bay and not anywhere in California.
  • Get enough influence to make other people Internet famous.

So, comment on this post if you have any ideas to help me become a famous Internet celebrity for wanting to become a famous Internet celebrity!
