Google Chrome EULA

by Brian on 9/4/2008

For everyone who’s complaining about the Google Chrome EULA and the clause that says, “Google owns a royalty free right to use everything created with the browser (or submitted to).” Has anyone ever realized yet that the Google Chrome browser is released under a BSD license, and if you don’t like the license you could just download the source and recompile the binaries and release your own browser with a different EULA?

Google has even been saying that Microsoft could take the code from Chrome and put it in IE if they wanted. So why not just rerelease Chrome with a more likable license?

I think the issue is that your common user will download it without reading the EULA, and wouldn't know how to (or want to) compile it even if they did have concerns. It's not a problem for a programmer, but Google's now a household word, so most users won't even know they can compile a safe copy themselves.
