Back in the Day

by Brian on 2/20/2008

Back in the day, before IM and when ICQ was just getting off the ground there was this thing used for chat called IRC. Surprisingly, IRC isn’t dead, at all.

If you use any open source program, such as Ubuntu, PHP, MySQL, Python, Ruby, Ruby On Rails, Asterisk PBX, and the list goes on and on, you should check out FreeNode. You can find a channel on this IRC network for almost every single open source project, and most of the time there is also a developer channel for projects too where the lead developers of those projects hang out. Hanging out in the IRC channel for a project is where you can get inside information on a project. You can find out about upcoming security fixes, new features being added, and most of all, you can interact with the project’s community and discover many different ways to get involved.

Open source software makes it easy to interact with the people behind the software you use.
