Maybe Not an iPhone Killer, but a Blackberry killer?

So I downloaded the Android SDK and launched the emulator for the gPhone–it’s still fun to call it that. I guess the first thing that surprised me when I started reading about the SDK was that the web browser is powered by WebKit, the same engine that runs the iPhone web browser, and the same engine that will power all the future iPhone apps. Quite an interesting move to compete with your competitors, use their open source software.

Just a few days ago before the Android SDK was released I had my first opportunity to use a Blackberry. Now once I fired up the Android SDK, instantly my first impression was how similar the Android experience is to the Blackberry. The main menu seems to feature the same options–an apps folder, web browser, contacts, etc. The keyboard interface of the emulator instantly reminded me of the Blackberry.

So I wonder, will RIM compete with Android, or simply adopt it on it’s devices? Eitherway, I guess they have the option of joining the team if the first option doesn’t work out.
