Apple Store and the Canadian Dollar

by Brian on 11/3/2007

So, is the Apple Online Store keeping up with the Canadian dollar? Let’s find out:

To buy an iMac from the Canadian store will cost you $1,299.00CDN. From the US store it would cost $1,199.00US, which according to xe.com comes to about
1,120.77CDN. ($1,299.00 – $1,120.00 = $179.00) So for a basic iMac you would pay $179.00 more, about 15% more.

An iPod Touch from the Canadian store will cost $329.00CDN. From the US store it will cost $299.00US, approximately $279.00CDN. ($329.00 – $279.00 = $50.00) So for an iPod touch, you would pay about $50 more from the Canadian store, about 18% more.

I would imagine that the Apple Store doesn’t really have that much choice, since they are probably locked into these prices so as to not undercut their resellers–or maybe it’s actually the other way around; if apple would drop their prices, we would also see lower prices in store.

Companies are quick to raise prices when it’s in their favour, but they take a long time to compensate the other way.
