Book Reading

by Brian on 10/31/2005

I finished reading Through Painted Deserts a few days ago. It’s a good read, different from Donald Miller’s other books, a little less theological as he puts it. It reminds me how life is a story, not necessary written about us, but for us–kind of similar to my idea of life being divided into chapters.

I’ve started to read Wild at Heart, by John Eldredge. At first I was a little turned off with how he reasoned about things in the introduction, but once I got past that it got a lot better. I guess I’m not the type of person who is easily convinced by a conclusion made by stringing together a couple of quotes taken from other books. Or because such and such happened in a movie, it must be a theological truth. I never really enjoyed books that leave me asking, “why did you come to that conclusion?” Anyway, don’t get me wrong, so far I like the book, and I’ll probably blog more about it later.

As for fiction, I’m reading, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. My brother recommended it. I’m trying to keep up on my fiction reading, because instinct tells me it’s important for a lot of reasons. It exercises the imagination muscle, probably relieves stress, builds creativity, helps me tell stories, and so on. Imagination teaches you how to break rules, create and invent.

I’ve also been reading the newspaper and drinking earl grey tea.
