I remember having a conversation with a girl two years ago. It was on labour day weekend just before I started my first year of university. We were at Manitoba Pioneer Camp for Leaders Camp, and we were sitting on the docks at night in our small group. My small group was interesting that year, as we were five guys and one girl. It wasn’t long before the only girl in the group, Mandy, earned the nickname, “Mom.”
While we were all sitting on the dock at night, praying together just before we were to go to our cabins, for some crazy and stupid reason I brought up the idea of girls, and that we would be entering the phase of our life where we would start meeting girls, and forming relationships, relationships that would be significant to the purpose of our lives. This caused Mom to go on a rant.
I can’t remember exactly everything that Mom said, I wish I did because it was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard about relationships my entire life, but I do remember that she said girls needed to be treated like princesses, because that’s what they are. She also said something to the effect of waiting for that princess, and waiting for the right time. Then in the coldness of the night Mom prayed for us. She prayed that each of us would be knights in shining armour, and that we would one day rescue our princesses.
Last night while laying in bed, I had just woken up from a vivid dream, I remembered these words that Mom told us. I was thinking that girls need to realize that they are princesses, and that guys need to start being knights.
Girls, don’t settle for anyone less that a knight.
Guys, start acting like knights. And more importantly, stop pretending, and thinking that you’re not one. If you know what gentleness means, if you know the least bit about how to put someone else’s needs before you’re own, then you’ll do fine. Don’t worry about the girls who reject you, call you losers, say you’re not good enough–it doesn’t matter, and that’s not the point anyway. Knights don’t wait around for a princess to realize they need rescuing, they go out and find one that is in danger. Knights usually believe they can rescue a princess, or at least they’re brave enough to die trying. If you have to, go to knight school; Jesus is a pretty good teacher.
I found a princess. I found her locked up in castle surrounded by a dark, black abyss. After I got her out of the castle we had to walk through an enchanted forest at night. There were bears, porcupines, and skunks. I had to fight off each one using my sword and shield; the weapons given to me by my father in heaven.
She was scared, but I held her hand and prayed with her.
Knights and princesses were meant to serve God together in the courts of his kingdom.
