If you’ve been following my blog posts the last few months you will remember that I went through a period of blogging about obedience, drinking, and obeying my parents. Through this period I did have the passage in John 2:10-12 quoted to me, where Jesus turns water into wine.
Now there’s a bit of irony to this passage that I did not connect to my past situation until tonight. Often this passage is seen as the passage that defends social drinking, but we often overlook another aspect of it. When Jesus turned the water into wine, it wasn’t just something he did for the glory of God, it was also something he did it for his mommy. It was an act of obedience because at first he didn’t want to do it, he even kind of refused. But his mom was persistent and just went ahead and ordered the servants to do what Jesus asked.
Jesus obeyed his mommy, even when it was something kind of silly. And I think this passage shows the humility Jesus had because even though he was the Son of God, and he knew his time hasn’t come yet, he still was obedient to his mommy–who was probably the most Godly mommy that ever lived.
Anyway, the irony from the connection of this passage to my own personal situation made me laugh, and reminded me that maybe God really does have a sense of humour.
His humour, and thinking really is very profound.
