I was reading through Exodus again tonight and I realized one detail about the story of Moses in the basket that I missed. This is just a thought I had tonight, and there is no way to really know if it’s true, but I read that Pharoah ordered the Egyptian people to throw all the Israelite baby boys into the Nile River.
Now, what river did Moses’s mother put Moses in? She put Moses inside a basket and placed it in the Nile River. When I was going through this story a few weeks ago when I taught it, I realized that Moses’s mother had no idea what was going to happen to Moses–Sunday school always gave me the impression that she somehow knew the outcome.
Was there more emotion involved in this little scene then we are led to believe? Was his mother really just placing the baby in a basket, a casket of sorts, to place him in the Nile River, the river of death?
