In the suitcase

I was listening to my grandpa tell me some stories about his dad. He was showing me a copy of the journal that he kept. His journal was a log of his life without any of his comments or thoughts. I remember that there would be times, in my own journals, where I would get really embarrassed at myself for stuff that I wrote. Maybe that’s why he avoided writing down his thoughts and feelings. I used to have that attitude, but I don’t really anymore. Sometimes I wish I had a better log of what I was thinking and feeling so that I could figure out my problems.

But there was something interesting about his journal. On the last page there was a note saying that in his suitcase there was an orange box that contained his will and a bunch of other stuff. When he died and they open it, inside the box was his will of course, but also there was a plan/outline/programme, for his funeral describing how it should take place.

It made me wonder how this guy lived his life. He knew very well that he was going to die.

For a long time I’ve been meaning to write a couple of letters and keep them in a envelope in my desk drawer. They would be letters to my friends to be read by them after I died, as kind of a last word of encouragement. I guess I would also have to update it every now and then. I never really gotten around to doing it because I have this crazy idea that when I write the letters I will like die or something the next day.

Though it’s not like dying will cheat us out of anything. Like common, we’ll get to have coffee with God.

I think that if you live your life knowing that if you die you will be standing with Jesus, you will walk on this earth with a lot of boldness and passion.

I love this verse:

“But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.” –1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
